The German Placement Test is designed to gauge your language skills and to place you into the appropriate level of German classes so that you can learn without being lost in a crowd of people who have had more practice with the language.

Our placement test is a multiple-choice online exam that takes about one hour. In order to receive an accurate placement recommendation from us, we advise you to take it just before the semester in which you plan to register for a German language course.* During the school year, you may also choose to meet with the Undergraduate Director to evaluate your level of German.

Please note: The placement exam does not give you credit for classes you place out of. It only places you in the appropriate class for your skill level. By contrast, students who earn a 4 or 5 on the German AP test receive credit for both 470:131 and 470:132.
