An examination of what it means to "translate" the Holocaust era into
works of remembrance -- including fiction, poetry, chronicles, memoirs,
documentary film, works of art, photography, museum displays, and
videotestimony.  Through close readings of these various media, the course
examines the dynamics of Holocaust remembrance from the immediate postwar
years to the beginning of the twenty-first century, considering how these
representations respond to changing social, aesthetic and ideological
contexts. Readings include works in English translation from French,
German, Hebrew, Italian, Polish, and Yiddish sources by such writers,
artists, and filmmakers as Wiesel, Arendt, Borowski, Levi, Klemperer,
Grossman, Spiegelman, Kiefer, Celan, Resnais, and Lanzmann.
