This course traces the genealogy of contemporary literary criticism from Kant through the German romantics to early 20th-century critical theory and deconstruction. In particular, we will explore the role of aesthetics in philosophical theories of subjectivity, and the structure of critical discourse in these theories. The course will be conducted in English; readings available in English and German. No knowledge of German is required.
