What
is a Placement Exam? |
A
placement exam is a multiple choice test that takes about one hour.
It is designed to gauge your skills at a specific language, in this
case, German. This is to help you get placed into the appropriate
level of German classes so that you can learn without being lost
in a crowd of people who have had more practice with the language.
It also helps make sure that students that aren't as well-prepared
don't slow down the courses that you are in. (During the school
year, you may choose to meet with the Undergraduate Director instead
of taking a placement exam.)

Who
has to take one? |
Students
who have taken two or more years of a foreign language in high school
must take a placement exam before taking that language again as
an undergraduate in college.

How
is it graded? |
Instead
of getting a number or letter grade, the department looks at your
score and places you in a level of German classes. The levels you
may be assigned are:
| |
121-122 |
German
in Review - for students who have completed two or more years of high school German but are not yet ready for German 131-132. |
131-132 |
Intermediate
German |
231-232 |
Advanced Conversation & Composition (German 232 completes the language track in German.) |
300 - level |
Advanced courses on various topics in German literature, film, language and culture. |

Important
Notes |
| |
The
placement exam does not give you credit for the classes you place
out of. It only places you in the appropriate class for your skill
level. AP Exams (Advanced Placement Exams), which are taken in accordance
with advanced high school classes, may or may not provide you university
credit, depending on your score and the policies of your college
at Rutgers. The Department of Germanic, Russian, and East European
Languages and Literatures does not control whether or not you receive
university credit from AP Exams. The department does not award major
or minor credits from the AP exam.
