"Analytic Crossings" lecture series sponsored by the Botstiber Institute of Austrian-American Studies

As a way of marking the 100th anniversary of Freud's historic visit to the
United States, we are organizing a lecture series at Rutgers University for fall 2009 entitled "Analytic Crossings." We would like to use this occasion to reflect on a number of related issues including: the "translation" of Freud's work in the US American context; the English-language translations of his writing; the figure of translation within it; and, most importantly, the interdisciplinary crossings to which psychoanalysis has given place. The series is sponsored by the Botstiber Institute of Austrian-American Studies.

Our guests will be:

  • Klaus Theweleit, "Freud and Pop Music " (Sept. 17, Zimmerli Art Museum, Lower Dodge Gallery, 4:30pm, co-sponsored by the Zimmerli Art Museum) .pdf for event
  • Galin Tihanov,"Interrogating Modernity: 'Romantik' in Hermann Broch and Eric Voegelin" (Sept. 24, 172 College Avenue, Rm. 102, 11:45am) .pdf for event
  • Michael Rohrwasser, "Serialized Psychoanalysis: The Sopranos, the Couch and the Small Screen" (Sept. 24, Alexander Library, 4th floor, 4:30pm) .pdf for event
  • Ernst Falzeder, "A fat wad of dirty pieces of paper: Freud in America, Freud on America, Freud and America" (Oct. 7, 172 College Avenue, Seminar Room, 4:30pm) .pdf for event
  • Alan Bass, "Psychoanalytic Process and the Paradoxes of Self Reference" (Oct. 22, Zimmerli Art Museum, Lower Dodge Gallery, 4:30pm, co-sponsored by the Zimmerli Art Museum) .pdf for event
  • Cathy Caruth, canceled

Michael Levine will be offering a graduate seminar in conjunction with the lecture series. In the seminar (which takes place Wednesdays at 4:30 P.M.), students -- and hopefully some faculty -- will read texts written or suggested by our guests. It is our hope that the seminar will provide a thread of continuity, helping students to prepare for the lectures and giving them the opportunity to respond in an ongoing manner afterwards. Readings include texts by Freud and post-Freudian analysts; works of literature, film and popular culture; literary criticism; philosophy; trauma and translation theory. The syllabus can be viewed at:

We would be delighted if you would join us for these public lectures. We
would also be grateful if you would bring this seminar to the attention of
    colleagues and students alike.
