How do I know what level German to take? Is there a placement test?

If you've taken two or more years of German in high school, you need to need to take a placement test before you can enroll in any German classes. We do not grant credit for high scores on placement exams, and you do not get credit for any courses you place out of. For more on placement exams, click here.

How can I get a special permission number?

  • For an undergraduate class, contact the Undergraduate Director, Michael Levine, for approval at mglevine@rci.rutgers.edu.
  • For a graduate class, contact the Graduate Director, Fatima Naqvi, for approval at naqvi@rci.rutgers.edu.
  • Once approved, give your name to the Department Administrator, Stefanie Toye, in return for your special permission number. Her information is available on the contact page.

How do I get a prerequisite override?

For a prerequisite override, contact the Undergraduate Director, Michael Levine, at mglevine@rci.rutgers.edu.

After 301, can you immediately take any 300 or 400 level course or do you have to take 302?

Students who have successfully completed 232 may enroll in any 300-level course taught in German. We often recommend 301-2 to students just making the transition to the 300-level. But these courses are not required. Students may take 301, 302, both, or neither. Since 300-level courses come after the end of the language track (which ends with 232), they can take these courses in any order or combination.

Do each 301 and 302 count towards the major and minor or just one of them or just the combination of them? Meaning: Do students have to take both 301 and 302 to receive credit for the major or minor or can they even get major credit for taking them after one another?

301 and 302 can each - and both - be counted toward either minor and either major option in German.

What could be the equivalent for the prerequisite 301 in order to take 302?

The prerequisite for both 301 and 302 is the same: 232.

If everything above 300 is upper level, what is the difference between a 300 and a 400 level class ( e.g. can students take Professor Naqvi's 436 class right after 301)?

400-level courses are intended to be more advanced than those at the 300-level. Students are advised to take at least one or two 300-level courses on literature, civilization or film before enrolling at the 400-level. Questions may be directed to Undergraduate Director Michael Levine at mglevine@rci.rutgers.edu.

Do you have to take Translation I first before taking Translation II? Do both classes count towards the major - also individually?

No: same as with 301/302. They can take either one or both; no order or
combination is prescribed.

Can I get something translated from German (or another language) into English?

Sorry, the department no longer provides this service.

I have a suggestion for the website.
