Kafka and World Literature: In the Maze of Existence

Kafka’s texts famously probed the industrialized bureaucracies of modern life. His prose describes an endless struggle against opaque institutions, shady authorities, and oppressive power-structures. This course will study some of Kafka’s most seminal texts and inquire upon their bearing on the literatures of the world. To this end, we will put Kafka’s critique of power in conversation with authors such as Paul Auster, J.M. Coetzee, and Flann O’Brien.
