In the past decade, Europe has faced a number of challenges: the ongoing refugee and humanitarian crisis, xenophobic movements on the rise, the European debt crisis, Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, and most recently, the war on Ukraine. Originally conceived as a supranational union consolidated by open borders and free trade, Europe emerges from the recent body of work produced by German filmmakers as a shattered ideal that demands to be re-considered in light of its democratic core values.
The international summer school “Visions of Europe: Cinema and Migration in Contemporary Germany” seeks to explore current cinematic representations of migration and post-migrant societies in Europe. We will investigate and discuss the visions – past, present, and future – of multiethnic communities that are at stake in Europe today in a program that combines film screenings, seminar discussions and keynotes.
