The Department is happy to announce that Professor Alexander Pichugin has been selected as a recipient of the 2019-2020 School of Arts and Sciences Award for Distinguished Contributions to Undergraduate Education at the Assistant Teaching Professor rank. Our colleague in the Russian Program, Professor Chloë Kitzinger, was also selected as a winner in the Assistant Professor category. German Major Serena Lückhoff presented her paper "Disembodied Cognition: Constructing a Barrier Between Language and Emotion" at the 2021 Virtual Convention of the Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA). Serena, who is double-majoring in German and Cognitive Science, brought both disciplines together to look at how multilinguals' relationships with their native and non-native languages differ as a function of how they are acquired and represented. She looked at how emotion interacts with language: many bilinguals and multilinguals feel emotionally distant from their non-native languages, suggesting that affective systems are somehow inhibited during second language use. Congratulations to Serena on this outstanding achievement!

Ian Stuart (German major, graduated in 2019), Giovanna Sartorio (German major, graduated in 2019), and Megan Stanton (German major graduated in 2020) were awarded Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships in Germany for 2020-2021. German Major Hailey Parikh has been accepted for the 2021 Ruhr Virtual Fellowship Program. The very selective Ruhr Fellowship gives undergraduate students in the US the opportunity to participate in an intercultural and language immersion program at the university level followed by an internship with one of Germany’s leading companies located in the Ruhr Area or a research internship at one of our UA Ruhr universities. 

Hailey, a German Studies and Physics double major, has been placed for an internship with the chair of experimental physics at the faculty of physics at TU Dortmund University in the field of medical physics. Her project is to work with simulations in medical physics. Congratulations, Hailey!
