Shallom is joining the department as an Excellence Fellow and a Presidential Fellow. Before joining the department, she completed her bachelor’s degree in European Studies, with a focus in German, at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Her bachelor’s thesis examined the fate of expelled Germans between 1940 and 1950 in Magda Kleiber’s Unter den Eichen von Mühlenhof. She was selected in 2024 to participate in the Goethe Institut Summer Program for German teachers in the United States, held in Bremen, Germany. She also completed a language-intensive course at the Kiel University in Germany.
She earned her master’s degree in German Studies from Florida State University. Her capstone project examined concepts of landscape in the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, with particular attention to the relationship between landscape, subjectivity, the sublime and gender.
Her research interests include German Romanticism, twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature, gender and women’s studies, and Black German Studies. More broadly, her work explores the intersections of gender, literature, and cultural identity within German studies.
